Why Forward Deployed Engineering Is Growing

Three forces are pushing companies to put engineers at the customer edge:

1. Complex products need translation. AI and data platforms are powerful but not turnkey. Customers can't adopt them alone, so companies send engineers who can bridge product and use case.
2. Speed beats generality. A generic product loses to one adapted fast to a customer's workflow. FDEs compress the time from "we have a product" to "it works for you."
3. Feedback loops win markets. The FDE sitting with customers feeds real signal back to product. Companies that learn fastest from deployment out-ship those that guess from the office.

The rise of LLMs accelerated all three: models are flexible but need heavy customization per customer, and the gap between demo and production is exactly what an FDE fills.

Skills Required to Become an FDE

You do not need to be the world's best coder, but you need an unusually broad mix. Group the skills into three buckets:

Technical

• Strong programming (Python is the default; SQL is mandatory)
• Ability to wire up APIs, databases, and data pipelines quickly
• Comfort reading unfamiliar codebases and debugging live systems
• For AI companies: basics of prompting, RAG, and model evaluation

Communication

• Explaining technical trade-offs to non-engineers
• Running demos and workshops with confidence
• Writing clear notes the product team will actually read

Judgment

• Knowing when to build a quick hack vs. push for a product fix
• Reading a customer's real need behind their stated request
• Managing scope so you don't silently become their full-time dev team

Best Practice: Pick one deep technical strength (e.g., data engineering or AI integration) and pair it with good communication. The rare combination — "can build and can talk to humans" — is what gets you hired.
