A Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer who works at the boundary between a company's product and its customers. They are technical enough to write production code, but they also spend real time understanding the customer's business, data, and goals.
Think of them as the engineer who "deploys forward" — into the customer's problem space — rather than staying behind the product line. They are not salespeople, and they are not pure backend engineers; they are a hybrid who can demo, build, debug, and translate.

An FDE's work is a mix of building and listening. On any given week they might write a custom integration, clean a customer's dataset, run a proof-of-concept, train the customer's team, and feed product gaps back to engineering.
